Embossed Funk Faces




 Lesson Objective: Students explore the medium of metal embossing to create relief in a metal medium. Students will gain knowledge in proportion of the face and complete a portrait using accurate proportion and self expression

Project Requirements: 
Sketchbook: Complete Portrait in full color with emotion, FUN and self expression
Full Page, Full Color Study to prepare for foil medium
Final Project: Complete a relief “Funk Face” in metal Tooling Foil Embossing
Use of full sheet of Tooling Fool and Full Color
Face in accurate proportion with relief based on class discussions
Funk Influences: Fun, Self Expression, Political/Social Message & Bold Color 
Mounted on foam and free-standing

Direct Instruction: Draw and shade each part of the face: Eye, Nose, Mouth, Ear. Draw a face in Blind Contour for pre-assessment
Discuss and practice drawing each item of the face over five days
Practice drawing a complete portrait in pencil

Art History
By the middle of the 1950s Abstract Expressionism had held sway in the Art World for a full decade, and there existed certain artists who felt the adulation had gone on for roughly nine years too long. 

In an uncoordinated artistic rebellion, a number of new movements began to gain traction. 
The one characteristic these movements had in common was shunning the abstract in favor of the tangible. This article will look at the delightfully-named Funk Art movement.

Funk Art? From Whence Came that Name?
The romantic version of Funk Art's etymology says it came from jazz music, where "funky" was a term of approbation. 
Jazz is also perceived as unrefined and -- especially with late 50s free jazz -- unorthodox. 
This fits neatly, for Funk Art was nothing if not unrefined and unorthodox. 

However, it is probably closer to the truth to say that Funk Art came from the original, negative meaning of "funk:" a powerful stench, an assault on one's senses.

Whichever version you believe, the "baptism" occurred in 1967, when UC Berkeley Art History professor and Founding Director of the Berkeley Art Museum, Peter Selz, curated the Funk exhibition.

Where Was Funk Art Created?
The movement got its start in the San Francisco Bay area, specifically at the University of California, Davis. 
In fact, many of the artists who participated in Funk Art were on the studio art faculty. Funk Art never outgrew being a regional movement, which is just as well. 
The Bay Area, the epicenter of the underground, was probably the one place in which it could have thrived, let alone survived.

How Long Was the Movement?
Funk Art's heyday was in the mid- to late-1960s. Naturally, its beginnings were much earlier; the (very) late-1950s seem to be the point of origin. 
By the end of the 1970s, things were pretty much over as far as artistic movements go. To include all possibilities, we can say Funk Art was produced for no more than two decades -- and 15 years would be more realistic. 
It was fun while it lasted, but Funk did not have a long life.

INSTRUCTION
Students will be instructed on how to draw a segment of the face each day, beginning with the eyes. They will spend half the class in instruction and half the class practicing their new skills. Over the course of four days, they will learn the eye, nose, mouth, ear, and proportions of the face. They will complete a whole portrait in pencil before beginning their self expression, self portrait inspired by the artist Robert Arneson

Robert Arneson (1930-1992)       Born:  Benicia, CA
Robert Arneson was encouraged by his father to draw. 
He drew cartoons for a local newspaper as a teenager. 
He studied art education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland 
He taught in a local high school, where he became interested in ceramics. 
He went on to receive an MFA from Mills College in 1958. 
Arneson became head of the ceramics department at the University of California at Davis in 1962
Arneson was greatly influenced by the expressionist work of fellow Californian Peter Voulkos, 
Arneson rejected the idea that ceramic artists produce only utilitarian or decorative items. 
He began creating non-functional clay pieces, contradicting formal traditions previously associated with this medium. 
He created a number of self-portraits using photographs, mirrors, and drawings;
Arneson was part of the dynamic group of irreverent California Pop artists whose work has come to be known as "Funk Art." After the artist became ill with liver cancer in the early 1980s, his work became progressively more somber in tone. Arneson's own confrontation with death made him aware of society's flirtation with mass destruction.

Tooling Foil Masks with Folk Artists

Folk Artists
Folk Art Tin work, known in Mexico as hojalata, goes back to the 16th Century. Artists use natural, oxidized and brightly lacquered paints to create ornaments, nichos, mirrors, lanterns and other decorative pieces. Our interesting variety of tin work comes from Oaxaca where the artists use more natural and lacquered tin, and from San Miguel de Allende where oxidized tin is more popular.
The Maya occupied a vast area covering southeast Mexico and the Central American countries of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Mayan culture began to develop in the Pre-Classic period, around 1000 B.C. and was at its heyday between 300 and 900 A.D. The Maya are well known for their writing, of which a great part can now be read, as well as for their advanced mathematics, astronomy and calendrical calculations.
Mayan masks had a wide variety of uses: 
Some of the most complex masks were created to adorn the faces of the dead.
The Mayan's wore masks during important events, including during battle.
Whatever the use of masks in battle was, today’s scholars are able to learn a lot about the Mayan civilization from surviving masks made by the Mayan people.
There were also masks that showed the faces of people. We know that some masks were used in wedding ceremonies, 
There were masks made to commemorate many births and deaths.
The Mayan's also used masks for entertainment.
The uses of masks by the Mayan people were as varied as the style of the masks themselves.

Tips for tooling Foil: 
Use dull pencils (we used colored pencils
Work on a pad of folded newspaper
Project create a two tear tooling foil sun mask 
Step1: On the first square, draw a new pattern on each of the four sides
Step2: cut the corners off the second square turning it into a circle
Step3: Think about what type of mask you are making, add eyes, nose, mouth, ears hair, etc. 
Step4: using sharpies color both of the tooling foil pieces
Step5: using a large bead hot glue the square pattern foil underneath the round, mask foil 

MATERIALS: 
2 sheets of 5”x 5” tooling foil
Dull pencils
Newspaper
Sharpie markers. 
Hot glue gun
Beads

Repousse' sculpture with Georgia O'Keeffe

















PREPARATION: cut foil, drawing paper and foam core to the same size before class begins. 6"x6" squares are ideal for this project.

What is sculpture made from? wood, metal, plaster, wax, 
Repousse’: a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side
The word repoussé is French and means "pushed up", 
Repoussage is actually the correct noun to refer to the technique, with repoussé
being an adjective referring to a piece to which the technique has been applied
English it has become common to use repoussé as a noun, and this usage is reflected in this article.
Most Famous Sculpture done with this technique? Statue of Liberty in New York
ARTIST: Georgia O’Keeffe 
(November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) 
O'Keeffe was a major figure in American art from the 1920s. 
She received widespread recognition for her technical contributions, as well as for challenging the boundaries of modern American artistic style. 
She is known for paintings of flowers, animal bones, and landscapes in which she synthesized abstraction and representation.
O'Keeffe played a central role in bringing an American art style to Europe at a time when the majority of influence flowed in the opposite direction. 
This feat enhanced her art-historical importance given that she was one of few women to have gained entry to this level of professional influence. 
She found artistic inspiration in the rural Southwest, particularly in New Mexico, where she settled late in life
Project: Create O’Keeffe Flowers as relief sculpture on tooling foil 9:30-10:30
Step 1: On paper, Using one minute  Blind Contour, practice drawing the group of flowers     Repeat 3-5 times
Step2: pick your favorite drawing of all the flowers or one flower
Step3: Tape drawing to 6" square of tooling foil (aluminum, copper or brass).
Step 4: Lay on pad of newspaper (or foam pads, if available).
Step 5: Trace over all lines with a ball point pen or popsicle stick - Remove drawing from foil.
Step 6: The Tool flower is in relief from back side - repoussee.
Step 7: Turn back over to front side and refine edges of flower.
Step 8: Add any textural effects desired.
Step 9: Color with permanent markers.
Step 10: adhere to same size cardboard or foam core
Materials:
Flowers or silk flowers. 
Square paper for blind contour drawings
Square tooling foil (or any desired size). 
Masking tape
Ball point pens or Popsicle sticks
Newspaper pads 
Permanent markers
Foam Core cut to the same size as the foil 6"x6" squares are ideal
