To have a pattern with stripes, they must repeat. 

Where do we find stripes? what animals have stripes?

Do tree’s have stripes? where are they?

Horizontal, this word means side to side or across.

Andy Warhol

(August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987), 

Born Andrew Warhola 

An American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker 

leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. 

After a successful career as a commercial illustrator,

Warhol became famous worldwide for his work as a painter

He was also filmmaker, record producer, author, 

Warhol has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, books, and feature and documentary films.

He coined the widely used expression "15 minutes of fame." 

The Andy Warhol Museum exists in memory of his life and artwork.

The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is $100 million for a 1963 canvas titled Eight Elvises. 

Died during routine gallbladder surgery in 1987

PROJECT

For this project we are only going to paint STRIPES with our color:

Step1: using your paint brush, paint one stripe on the bottom of your page

Step 2: paint the next color on top of the first but make it slightly smaller on both sides

Step3: paint the next color on top of the first but make it slightly smaller on both sides

step 4; paint the next color on top of the first but make it slightly smaller on both sides

Step5: paint the last stripe at the very top, this stripe should be the smallest

Step6: add stars to each of your stripes

Step7: add one star on top

MATERIALS: 

Liquid watercolor in five colors: red, blue, pink, green and purple

Paint brushes

Hold up different colors of green and ask what color it is

how can six colors of green all be green???

Value we have talked about adding white to colors

what did it do? makes them lighter

What happens if we added black to colors?

it would make them darker

Blue becomes navy

PROJECT: Create a tree using values of green and triangles

Step 1: On Blue Paper, paste on a tree trunk in brown rectangle

Step2: on the truck paste a green triangle

Step3: on top of the triangle paste another value of green triangle

Step4: repeat until you have five triangles on to of one another creating a tree

Step5: Using two small yellow triangles add a star on top of your tree

Step6: using stripes of cut words from magazines paste three on top of each other 

creating a snow flake

Step7: repeat until you have three snow flakes on your page

Step8: fill in more snowflakes with white oil pastels 

Step9: if time allows teh students could add a 3 to 5 ornaments to the tree using

buttons or sequins or more collage materials

MATERIALS: 

values of greens pre-cut into triangles

magazines, scrap paper

Two pre-cut yellow triangles

Glue

words from magazines cut into stripes for snowflakes

white oil pastels

Brown or olive tree trunks

ADAPTIONS: could create christmas trees with ornaments and presents

For older groups of children you could create a two week project and have them cut, create and prepare all the values of green for the project.

PREPARATION:

I created our snow paint before we began.

It is half Shaving cream and Glue.

A folk Artist is an untrained artist someone who has not studied art in school

Maud Lewis is a Folk Artist
1903-1970
Nova Scotia, Canada
Born in Ohio
She suffered from disabilities as a result of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
lived most of her life in poverty with her husband in Marshalltown.
he began her artistic career by hand-drawing Christmas cards.
These proved popular with her husband's customers as he sold fish door to door and encouraged her to begin painting.
She used bright colours in her paintings and subjects were often of oxen teams, horses, or cats.
All of her paintings are of outdoor scenes.
Her house was one-room with a sleeping loft and is now located in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax.
Most of Maud Lewis' paintings are quite small - often no larger than eight by ten inches
she is known to have done at least three paintings 16 inches by 20 inches.
Her technique consisted of first drawing an outline and then applying paint directly out of the tube.
She never mixed colors.
She painted on everything in the home as she often did not have enough money to buy supplies

Step2: put a red bird on one of the branches
Step4: Using the “snow paint the bottom of the page
Step5: paint in a large circle
Step6: paint a medium circle on top
Step7: paint a small circle on top (snow man)
